Chapter 7

The little black pig’s condition was clearly not right, so I planned to visit my master before descending the mountain to help me figure out what illness it might have. But the little black pig glanced at me, flipped over, and went back to sleep. I had never heard of such a lazy spirit beast. I flicked the hilt of my sword, drawing out a small, cold beam of light from the blade. The cold light reflected off the little black pig. I thought to myself, "I haven’t broken my fasting yet. I’ve heard that humans have a dish called roast suckling pig. How about...?" The little black pig immediately jumped up and, with its little short legs, started running toward my master’s mountain foot at full speed. I met Song Qinglan at the foot of the mountain. As soon as she saw me, she smiled. "Junior sister, it’s been a few days. Your spirit beast has gotten even fatter!" I glanced at the Phoenix perched on her shoulder. It was so light and elegant, in stark contrast to the little black pig lying lazily to the side. The Phoenix’s feathers were no longer as glossy as when we first met, but its expression was still haughty. Now it rested on Song Qinglan’s shoulder, looking at us with a sideways glance. In my previous life, after forming the contract with the Phoenix, I was always carrying a piece of wutong wood with me, because without wutong, it would circle in the sky and never land. Even when I stretched out my arm to signal it to stand, it would avoid me. Now it didn’t seem to mind Song Qinglan at all. True love, indeed. I smiled and shook my head. "Of course, it’s because I take good care of it. Unlike senior sister’s spirit beast, in just a few days, its feathers have already lost their luster." Song Qinglan glared at me angrily but restrained her displeasure, her voice tinged with a hint of testing. "I know my spiritual power is weak and I can’t take care of the Phoenix well. Anyway, junior sister, you have so many treasures and no spirit beast to care for, so why not lend me some spirit herbs?" I looked into Song Qinglan’s hopeful eyes and sincerely asked, "Senior sister, where is your brain?" I took out a spirit herb from my storage bag. "Would you like this?" Song Qinglan’s eyes immediately brightened. "Thank you, junior sister! Don’t worry, the Phoenix will protect you when it transforms into human form in the future!" I handed the spirit herb to the little black pig. After it finished eating, I said to Song Qinglan, "No need to thank me. After all, I still have my own spirit beast to take care of, and I don’t have the energy to raise another one." Song Qinglan was incredulous, shouting, "It’s just a pig!" "It’s the spirit beast I chose." I said firmly. "Song Qinglan, you stole your spirit beast. Take care of it yourself and don’t expect me to be the one to make this stupid sacrifice." As for lending her spirit herbs? Dream on. I’ve already said it—there’s no way the Phoenix will ever take advantage of me in this life. "You’ll regret this!" Song Qinglan gritted her teeth. Beside her, the Phoenix looked at me with longing but didn’t know how to fight for itself. I shook my head and smiled. "I’ll never regret it."
